Our names are Terry Marsh and Theresa McFadyen and we launched Crimson Yard, in November of 2016, an e-commerce business.
Our business started with Friends and family asking for their own candles as gifts for themselves or for others. We had no idea, that within a year we would be running a our business, distributing our candles around the word while still balancing our full-time careers.
Terry works throughout Muskoka as a Carpenter and has for many years, overseeing crews for a large construction company, building Muskoka’s infamous cottages and I work throughout the Muskoka region with Emergency Services, assisting individuals experiencing sudden loss of life and other major life altering events caused be a serious crime or tragedy…
About the candles...
While experimenting, we learned we could use minimal ingredients to produce a high-quality candle eliminating a lot of toxins and achieving an exceptional burn time.
Without dyes, whiteners, paraffin wax and other additives meant our candles would burn warmer instead of hot, allowing for a cooler and cleaner wax pool, resulting in candles that burns in excess of 130 hours for our smallest 15oz tin tumbler and 300 hours for our largest 40oz tin candle. We also use perfume grade fragrances that produce a light to medium scent throw with warm, smoky, sweet notes with a touch of spice that blend precisely to obtain a rich authentic aroma held in three different sizes.
Each candle is hand poured by us, into vintage style tin cans using all natural wooden wicks that achieves a truly unique appearance and crackles slightly when lit, adding that subtle cabin feel of a wood burning fire.
Our packaging and shipping...
Each candle is packaged by us in boxes made from recycled material stamped with our logo and placed in a nest of shredded news paper, printed in our home town in Muskoka. The news print protects your candle during shipping and acts as an insulator if temperature fluctuates as well as helps our environment by repurposing the news print.
Each candle box is then wrapped using an all natural hemp twin, securing the lid as it makes it way to your front door.
How do we manage everything...
Starting our own business was something we both dreamt about and was often the topic of conversation during our morning coffee ritual. We had no idea where to start especially with an e-commerce business and balancing full-time careers. Once we started, things kind of fell into place naturally. We each have strengths and once we figured out what they were, we utilize them together to run our business like a well oiled machine.
Terry’s in charge of the candle production process, combining the precise amount of our very own unique blended fragrances with soy wax heated to its preferred temperature, he has it down to a science and knows every aspect about producing the perfect candle. He is also the brains behind our label and logo design and pre-stamps each candle box with our wise owl logo...when I do it, it resembles a chubby chickadee...
I’m in charge of all the techy stuff including; social media, imaging, website development and sales. Through social media, I’m able to connect with customers quickly and am alerted to incoming orders that will be processed at night for next day shipments, sent out while we are back at work the next day.
Our focus and future plans...
Although, we have started the business as essentially a candle company, we are planning for growth in the future.
